How can we heal from sexual trauma? If our bodies carry trauma, how can we release it? In what way does self-care tie into trauma resolution? The indomitable Rachael Maddox joins me today for a deep conversation about her journey and work with trauma.
Trigger warning: in this episode we will be talking about sexual trauma, including rape. No strong details are used but if sexual trauma is something you’ve experienced take it slow and if you need to take a break, please do so! I think this is a very important episode and I’m excited to share it with you but I want everyone to put their own safety and self-care first.
Rachael Maddox is a trauma resolution educator, coach and guide who’s helped hundreds of women and men resolve their sexual trauma and reclaim their pleasure, power and wholeness.
In her first book, SECRET BAD GIRL, Rachael tells the story of her return to wildness, sensuality, health and embodied safety after a decade living under the trauma spell.
Her next book, SEX AFTER TRAUMA, publishes fall 2018, and is written to help people navigate life between the sheets after they’ve been through the worst of it.
If you’re new to Rachael or the territory of trauma resolution, check out this free 8-part video series, Becoming a Grown Goddess, that covers Trauma 101, Boundaries & Belonging, Sex After Trauma, and more!
Rachael’s professional training includes Alchemical Alignment Trauma Resolution & Embodiment of Spirit, The Coaches Training Institute and The Awakened Leadership Academy.
First of all, I love Rachael’s take on spirituality “Am I coming home to love and creativity?” Which I think ties in wonderfully with the interview I did with Melissa recently. Love and creativity are two sides of the same coin. The desire to love and to create is what makes the world. It ties in with the Yetzer Ha-Ra and the Yetzer Ha-Tov. I just love it.
I also think what Rachael brings up about the #metoo campaign is an important part of the larger cultural conversation. As important as #metoo is in showing that this is a real problem in our culture, as Rachael pointed out it has not been given any container for the safety and healing of anyone. Whereas in a session with a trauma specialist you can be given the space you need to process what has happened.
In Rachael’s work she helps people go from no choice/no power to all choice and all power. I really loved this part of the conversation, that although our bodies hold on to trauma, our bodies also know how to release that trauma and can tell us what we need if we learn how to listen.
Self-care is a huge topic in the coaching industry (and a cultural buzzword). When Rachael talks about self-care and pleasure, it is about expanding your capacity and giving yourself a foundation for your life. That can be anything you need it to be, anything that feels needed and delicious for you.

Now an announcement, I’m going to be taking a break for December (and possibly January?) I’m going to be working behind the scenes to put more attention on the things I want to focus on and figure out what direction I want to take my business in going forward.
I’m also going to be recovering from the past month and a half in my personal life. Short version: we bought a RV, renovated it to be completely off-grid, sold/threw out/gave away 80-90% of our stuff, and we have to completely move by Thursday. All of this is still going on, all of it simultaneously. So it’s been a bit stressful. Therefore, I need a break. But I have a fantastic lineup planned for when I come back and you can still get updates on Instagram. In the meantime, Happy Holidays and be kind yourself.
